Earlier in the week, the Patriots made a restricted agent offer to Emmanuel Sanders of the Pittsburgh Steelers, which would have cost them this year’s 3rd round pick. The Steelers had until midnight tonight to match the offer. I didn’t think they would match it, but after the loss of Mike Wallace, it must have been too much to part with at this time. That stinks. The last restricted agent offer to a wide receiver the Patriots did (and perhaps the last restricted agent offer period) was Wes Welker to my knowledge. We know how that turned out. It would have been cool to see what Sanders could have done for the Pats.
Since they only matched a one-year offer, I believe it means Sanders will be a free agent next year. Perhaps the Patriots will try again. At least Sanders knows they are interested.
